118th NAA Target Championships 2002
The afternoon session on the first day. Started great but the rains came on the second end of the second round - gusty winds, driving rains, cold raindrops. brrr. The leader boards depicted are from the end of the morning session's scoring.

Wunderle and Peterson lead recurve categories during first day of Nationals,
Penaz and Zorn lead in compound bow
Canton, Mich. –
Victor Wunderle (Mason City, Ill.) and Jessica
Peterson (Malibu, Calif.) lead the men's and women's recurve bow divisions,
respectively, after the first day of the 118th National Target
Championships/U.S. Grand Prix. 2000 Olympic silver medallist, Wunderle, recorded
a first-day total of 642. Christopher Shull (Chula Vista, Calif.) placed second
with a score of 630 with a one-point lead over Richard “Butch” Johnson with a
first day total of 629. Peterson led the women's recurve bow category with a
score of 629, five points ahead of Judy Devoll’s (Gadsden, Ala.) two day total
of 624. Olympian, Janet Dykman (El Monte, Calif.), captured the third position
with 609 points. In the men's compound bow division, Mark Penaz (Phoenix, Ariz.)
leads the field with a total of 662 points. Dave Cousins (South Portland, Maine)
is in second place with 657 points and Adam Wheatcroft (James Madison
University) is third with a total of 652 points. Nancy Zorn (Warrenville, Ill.)
holds a one-point lead in the women's compound bow division. Her score of 677
leads both Christie Bisco (Raymond, Maine) who has a score 676 and Amber Dawson
(Robeson, Penn.) is in third place with 674. Complete results can be found at
www.usarchery.org. The tournament continues on Tuesday for all categories. Youth
and adults are working trying for their opportunity to win the National
Championship. The tournament continues through Friday. The National Champion
will be named on Thursday. The tournament concludes on Friday with the 6th
Annual U.S. Open, a head-to-head elimination round featuring the top qualifiers
shooting the adult-distances. This Olympic round competition will conclude the
tournament with head to head competition in the same format used during the
Olympic Games. The U.S. Open features both U.S. and foreign competitors.
